Hello all year 9 Geographers,

You are about to start your IGCSE in Geography. Before you do that there are a few things that you need to know.

You can get a copy of the Cambridge IGCSE Syllabus at this website address:

http://www.cie.org.uk/qualifications/academic/middlesec/igcse/subject?assdef_id=859

You will need to download the 2015 Syllabus (as you will be taking the exam that year). The syllabus is mainly written for teachers but have a look through, it tells you the topics that you will be studying and it also tells you about the exams you will sit. At CES we will do papers 1, 2 and 4. You can also share this information with your parents if they are interested in what you will be studying.

Topic 1 - Population

The first topic of the year is about population. The worlds population is growing incredibly quickly. Go to this link:

http://breathingearth.net/

It shows you a map of the earth. Pay attention to the white and black flashing dots. Each white dot means a person has been born in that country and each black dot means someone has died. Look at Egypt, how often are people being born compared to dying? In which countries are the dots flashing the fastest? (In India one person is born every 1.3 seconds and one person dies every 3.6 seconds).

Now go to this link:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/geography/population/population_change_structure_rev1.shtml

Look at the graph at the bottom of the page, it shows world population change over the past 2500 years. Describe this change and attempt to explain why the population has grown so quickly over the last 200 years.

If you have any questions then email me,

Mr Mitchell
